2024 MTV Video Music Awards: Megan Thee Stallion hosts, Eminem and Katy Perry perform, and Taylor Swift leads nominations
The MTV Video Music Awards are still shining bright after four decades! They have a red-hot host, Megan Thee Stallion, a highly respectable show opener, Eminem, and a group of performers that includes two of the year's buzziest talents, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan.

The 2024 VMAs will air live from New York's UBS Arena on Wednesday, September 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Katy Perry, who won video of the year in 2011 for "Firework" and hosted the ceremony in 2017, is expected to get the Video Vanguard Award and perform a hit medley. (She's the first person in VMA history to host, win Video of the Year, and get the Vanguard Award - the MTV trifecta).
Cyndi Lauper, who won the Moon Man for best female video at the first VMAs on September 14, 1984, is among the presenters. (The show has become more woke: the award is now known as the Moon Person, and all categories are gender-neutral.) Carson Daly is also scheduled to present. Daly hosted MTV's popular TRL show from 1998 to 2003, when the channel still showed music videos rather than endless reruns of Ridiculousness and Catfish.
Eminem will start the performance, just weeks after his latest album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Just last week, his 2005 hits compilation Curtain Call: The Hits became the first hip-hop album to spend 700 weeks on the Billboard 200.
This year, Eminem received eight nominations. His huge hit "Houdini," which peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, is nominated for six prizes, including video of the year and song of the summer. In addition, Eminem has been nominated for artist of the year and VMAs most iconic performance for his 2000 performance of "The Real Slim Shady" and "The Way I Am" with over 100 Eminem lookalikes.
If Eminem wins in just one of the eight categories, he will break the record with Peter Gabriel for the most victories by a male artist in the show's history (13).
Taylor Swift tops all musicians with 12 nominations this year. If she wins five or more, she would surpass Beyoncé as the artist with the most VMAs in history. Beyoncé presently has 27, followed by Swift (23) Madonna (20), and Lady Gaga (18).
Teddy Swims and Jessie Murph will make their VMA debuts by performing on the Extended Play Stage. Le Sserafim will make their American award show debut by performing at the VMAs pre-show.
General fan voting on MTV's website ended Friday (September 6). Voting for best new talent continues throughout the performance.
Swift still has the most nominations (12), followed by Post Malone (11), Eminem (eight), Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, Sabrina Carpenter, and SZA (seven each); Benson Boone, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, GloRilla, LISA, Olivia Rodrigo, and Teddy Swims (four each).
Swift and Malone will not be performing, nor will Grande, SZA, Boone, or Eilish, who have all received numerous nominations.
The 2024 VMAs will be broadcast live on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT throughout MTV's global network, which includes BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV, MTV2, Nick at Nite, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land, VH1, and Univision.
Nessa, Dometi Pongo, and Kevan Kenney host the 90-minute live VMAs pre-show special, which airs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, MTV2, CMT, and Logo.
Bruce Gillmer and Jesse Ignjatovic, co-founder of Den of Thieves, serve as executive producers. Barb Bialkowski is a co-executive producer. Production executives include Alicia Portugal and Jackie Barba. Wendy Plaut is the executive in charge of celebrity talent. Lisa Lauricella is a music talent executive.
